Bargain Stay at Sandaway Beach

Sun Holiday

Keen to take full advantage of an Inset day, we booked a short break away with the Sun Holidays. I'm sure you've seen them advertised?! Collect the codes from the newspaper or online, enter 10 codewords onto the 950 holidays site and choose from a range of parks and dates. Fingers crossed, you get lucky and manage to grab a bargain!

Being early in the season we bagged 3 nights at Sandaway Beach, in Devon, for just £40, (no extras needed to be added) This small holiday park is set close to the sleepy village of Combe Martin in North Devon, on the edge of Exmoor National Park.

Arrival and Accommodation

On arrival at the John Fowler Holiday Parks, we experienced a quick and efficient check in and were given the keys to our holiday home. Just what we needed after a three hour journey on a Friday evening!

Now, we had been expecting a caravan, which is generally the standard given o Sun Holiday package, but that's not what we got. It was actually better!

We were in a top floor, large spacious apartment. The decor was dated but does that affect the use? Absolutely not!

It was clean and tidy, boasting 2 very large bedrooms, living area, kitchen diner and bathroom. Equipped with everything we'd need for our stay, all we needed were clothes, toiletries and washing up liquid/sponge. From up here the views were fantastic overlooking the cliffs and the sea.

The Park

The holiday park was clean with little over 100 holiday homes, with a small clubhouse; offering evening entertainment and an itinerary of other activities available during our stay, play park and outdoor heated swimming pool. Although we didn't use these on this occasion, as we preferred to explore the area.

During our stay, the site was peaceful and offered a quiet sanctuary (Don't expect phone signal or 4g)

There was a pathway down from the site, which led to Mermaids Cove. A small private cove covered in pebbles with rock pools and nooks and crannies for exploring. The park is positioned on the hillside so this may be tricky with those needing a wheelchair.

The Local Area

The park makes a fantastic base for exploring north Devon. The location is suitable for those wanting to explore Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and beaches of north Devon.

Ilfracombe is seaside resort, with a small harbour, local shops and pubs. Take a walk to the top of the mount, for stunning views across the water of the Bristol channel and follow the spiral path down the cliff face back to the village.

Verity, stands proudly at over 65 foot, on the edge to the harbour, she is a stainless steel and bronze statue and she is quite a sight.

Woolacombe has been voted one of the best beaches in the UK, 3 sandy miles facing out of the Atlantic ocean.

We also stumbled upon Croyde Beach, by chance after checking out the National Trust app. The beach offered a perfect spot for body boarding and surfing. We had purchased wetsuits on our way down to the beach, no it was obligatory to use them immediately!...loved every minute!

Once we'd removed ourselves from the water, we headed over to the rockpools. The rocks were covered with shellfish and the pools were teeming with sea creatures.

There are many National Trust places within easy reach of Sandaway Beach, some of which don't have a standard property price, just pay for parking and then explore. Haddon Valley and Heddon Mouth was just like this (although we are National Trust members so parking was FREE) we walked the 2 mile circular trail, it is surrounded with towering cliffs, secret coves and forest within Exmoor National Park.
